Jon A.: Finding Peace in Sobriety at 26

For me, what it means to be grateful, to be an alcoholic, is: not only do I get to be a person, but I feel as if I get to live with this insight that most people in their lives never get, and it's a gift of alcoholism, because if I weren't an alcoholic, I wouldn't be in a step program and I wouldn't be in a position to like focus on growing Every Single Day and to help other people and to see this other beautiful side of the world right.
Imagine coming home from work every night, not to relax, but to drown out your feelings with alcohol. That was Jon A.'s life before he decided to turn things around. In this episode of 'Keep Coming Back', Jon opens up about his struggle with addiction and the journey that led him to sobriety. He describes how alcohol shifted from being a social lubricant to a crutch that helped him escape his emotions.
It wasn't about fun anymore; it was about not feeling anything at all. Jon shares the moment he realized he had crossed a line and needed help. He talks candidly about seeking professional assistance and the trial-and-error process of finding what worked for him. His story highlights the importance of persistence, as it took him weeks and months to find the right path. One of the most striking parts of Jon's journey is his perspective on alcoholism as a gift.
He explains how being an alcoholic has given him a unique lens through which he views the world, pushing him to grow daily. Jon also discusses the power of step programs in helping him overcome feelings of isolation and uniqueness. Making amends has been a crucial part of Jon's recovery. He emphasizes the importance of honesty and vulnerability, especially with his sponsor, which has led to the most genuine relationship he's ever had.
Jon also finds hope and inspiration in helping others, which has been a significant source of growth for him. Jon's story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, there's always a way out. His journey through addiction and recovery underscores the importance of seeking help and making amends. 'Keep Coming Back' continues to share these inspiring stories, reminding us that we're never alone in our struggles.
