Mitchel G.'s Journey: Embracing Two Freedoms in Recovery

The first freedom I enjoy is freedom from the slavery of alcohol. The big book clearly says that before I am halfway through making amends, I will begin to know a new freedom, not the old freedom of doing what I pleased without regard to others, but the new freedom that allows fulfillment of the promises of my life.
Imagine being a teenager and feeling like alcohol is the only way to cope with the chaos at home. That was Mitchel G.'s reality. Growing up in an alcoholic household, he turned to booze and drugs to escape his anger and pain. But what started as a solution quickly became a trap. Fast forward over 30 years, and Mitchel is now sharing his powerful, and at times humorous, story of recovery on the Daily Reflection Podcast.
Mitchel talks about the concept of two freedoms that those in recovery can achieve. The first is 'freedom from'—freedom from the grip of alcohol and drugs. This freedom means no longer being a slave to substances that once dictated his every move. He describes the immense relief of breaking free from the compulsion to drink, and how this newfound freedom allowed him to face life’s challenges without fear.
The second freedom is 'freedom to'—freedom to live a life filled with purpose and clarity. Mitchel shares how this freedom has given him the ability to choose sobriety every day, to be himself, and to express his opinions without fear of rejection or failure. He talks about finding peace of mind, experiencing love, and growing spiritually. Mitchel's journey isn't just about staying sober; it's about thriving in sobriety.
He discusses how living with cancer has illuminated his life in unexpected ways, and how sponsoring others in AA has been a beautiful part of his recovery. Through these experiences, he’s found a framework for living that’s built on truth, honesty, and reconciliation. Tune into this episode of the Daily Reflection Podcast to hear Mitchel’s heartfelt story.
