Jane P.: From Punk Rock Chaos to 26 Years of Sobriety

I heard a wonderful thing in my first meeting in that room and that was: this is not your fault, this is a disease- and it seemed to lift everything, whoa.
Ever wonder how someone goes from the chaos of the punk rock scene to 26 years of sobriety? Meet Jane P., whose life story is nothing short of remarkable. Given up for adoption at just 18 months, Jane faced a tumultuous childhood that spiraled into pre-teen drinking and a rebellious streak. Raised by a loving but perplexed older couple, she ran away from home at 14, seeking solace in wild behavior and self-harm.
Her journey took her deep into London's early punk rock scene, followed by a rocky 15-year marriage that ended in divorce. Known as 'Mad Jane' during these turbulent years, she seemed destined for ruin. But fate had other plans. A friend's long-ago mention of Alcoholics Anonymous came back to her at a critical moment, leading her to seek help in the U.S.
With the support of AA and a dedicated sponsor, Jane confronted her past through the transformative Fourth and Fifth Steps of the program. Despite a slip after a year and a half, she persevered, finding renewed hope and purpose in sobriety. In this episode of 'AA Recovery Interviews', Jane opens up about her incredible journey, emphasizing the importance of community and the joy of being known and loved within an AA group.
Her story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible and that no one is ever truly alone in their struggles.
