The Hidden Impact of Intimate Partner Violence: Insights from Dr. Eve Valera

Unfortunately, three-quarters of them sustained at least one partner-related brain injury. And I think that was very compelling for me because, anecdotally, we've known forever that women who are in partner violence situations have problems with maybe attention, concentration, learning, memory. Here there's definitely this relationship between the brain injuries as well.
Imagine enduring violence at home and then grappling with the long-term effects of brain injury. Dr. Eve Valera, a dedicated neuroscientist, has spent over two decades studying how traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often result from intimate partner violence. In this episode of 'Charged', Dr. Valera reveals the startling statistics: nearly one in three women experience physical or sexual violence from a partner, and a significant number of these women suffer TBIs as a consequence. Dr.
Valera's research paints a vivid picture of the cognitive impairments these women face, including issues with attention, concentration, and memory. She shares heart-wrenching stories from her interviews, where three-quarters of the women reported at least one brain injury due to partner violence. Despite the many hurdles in recognizing and addressing this issue, Dr. Valera's commitment to her work is unwavering. Listeners will gain an understanding of the barriers Dr.
Valera encounters in her research, from societal stigma to the challenges of gathering accurate data. Her efforts extend beyond academia; she also trains non-medical professionals to better identify and support victims of partner violence. As the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates these issues, Dr. Valera's insights become even more crucial. This episode is a powerful exploration of a hidden public health crisis.
It's not just about statistics; it's about real lives affected by violence and the urgent need for greater awareness and research. Tune in to 'Charged' to hear Dr. Valera's compelling findings and her call for action in addressing intimate partner violence and its devastating impact on women's health.
