Are You Really Being Fed, or Has Your Spiritual Appetite Changed?
Episode Overview
- Feeling "unfed" spiritually may reveal a changed or unhealthy spiritual appetite rather than poor preaching.
- True spiritual food includes correction, rebuke and encouragement, not just comforting messages.
- Partial teaching of Scripture can be as harmful as false teaching because it leaves out vital truth.
- Real growth comes from sermons that confront sin and flesh, leading to repentance and transformation.
- Fulfilment and satisfaction are found in doing God’s will daily, becoming more like Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
“Sometimes sermons shouldn't always be what you want to hear. Sometimes they should really get into your business.”
What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? Bishop Lance Johnson answers this by going straight to the heart of spiritual hunger and what it really means to be "fed". Drawing on years as a pastor, he talks about people leaving churches with the complaint, "I'm not being fed," and flips the question back: is the problem the preaching, or has the spiritual appetite changed?
Using the simple image of choosing a restaurant, Lance explains that just as physical diet reflects your health goals, your spiritual diet reflects your spiritual condition. If you're craving comfort and ease, you might drift towards teaching that avoids confronting sin or sacrifice. If you genuinely want to grow, you'll look for truth that strengthens you, even when it's uncomfortable. As he puts it, "Sometimes sermons shouldn't always be what you want to hear.
Sometimes they should really get into your business." Drawing from 2 Timothy and Acts 20, he warns about chasing teachers who say what "itching ears" want to hear and reminds you that failing to preach the whole counsel of God is dangerous, even if parts of the Bible are being taught. True spiritual feeding, he says, includes correction, rebuke, and encouragement, all wrapped in God’s love.
Lance repeatedly points back to holiness, transformation by the Holy Spirit, and a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. He challenges you to check your own appetite before blaming a church: are you resisting truth because it confronts your flesh, or are you leaning into sermons that sometimes offend you, then lead you to repentance and change?
For anyone in recovery or simply wanting a deeper walk with God, this message asks a hard but freeing question: are you really hungry for the kind of truth that changes everything?
