Eboni Jewel Sears: A Journey from Navy Seabee to Teen Recovery Mentor

Essentially, when you say not having been used to seeing it, are you saying, because of their backgrounds, of family backgrounds or the communities they live in, how come they haven't seen that kind of you know?
Imagine moving around the country with a military family, navigating different schools, and constantly adapting to new environments. That was Eboni Jewel Sears' life. Today, she calls Las Vegas home and has transformed her varied experiences into a career dedicated to helping teens in recovery.
In this episode of the SMART Recovery® Podcast, Eboni shares her unique journey from being a Navy Seabee to a long-haul truck driver, and now, a peer recovery support specialist at the Alternative Peer Group Las Vegas. Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of community support. Eboni dives into what it means to be a SMART facilitator, emphasizing the importance of language in bridging gaps between different recovery programs like AA and SMART.
She candidly discusses her initial reluctance to become a facilitator and what ultimately changed her mind. For those working with teens, Eboni offers valuable insights on making SMART Recovery tools engaging and relatable for younger audiences. One of the most compelling parts of Eboni's story is her experience of keeping her recovery and sexual identity hidden while serving in the Navy.
She touches on how these aspects of her life intersect and the importance of creating safe spaces for open dialogue. Eboni also highlights the joy and fun that can be part of the recovery journey, breaking the stereotype that recovery has to be a solemn process. Eboni's dedication extends beyond her immediate role. She facilitates an online meeting for maladaptive behaviors and collaborates with the Las Vegas School District to integrate SMART Recovery into school curriculums.
As an African American, LGBT woman, she brings a unique perspective that enriches the SMART Recovery community. This episode isn't just about Eboni's journey; it's a treasure trove of practical advice and inspiration for anyone involved in recovery, whether you're seeking help or supporting someone who is. Tune in to hear how Eboni uses SMART principles to create meaningful change and why she believes it's okay to have fun along the way.
