Duane's Journey: From Homelessness to Hope
I grew up with an idea of spirituality that didn't support me, being who I was, and really supported me, hating who I was, and therefore there was this lack of self-love and lack of support. And when I didn't kind of get that validation, there was sort of like this emptiness in me.
Ever felt like you're trying to fill an unfillable void? Duane knows that feeling all too well. In this episode of 'Proud Voices', hosts Kaylee Hoaby and Luke Miller sit down with Duane, a former resident of Pride Institute, who opens up about his tumultuous journey through addiction, homelessness, and ultimately, self-discovery. Growing up with a spiritual background, Duane often felt an emptiness that he tried to fill with overeating, drinking, and sex.
This led him down a path of dual substance use disorder and eating disorder, compounded by periods of homelessness and joblessness. Yet, amidst the chaos, Duane found the strength to turn his life around. Sober since March 13, 2020, he shares how he navigated the challenges of sobriety and body image issues. His story is not just about overcoming addiction; it's about mending broken relationships with family and loved ones, and finding self-love and acceptance in his true self.
Duane also touches on the impact of addiction on dental health and how he worked towards recovery in this area. This episode is a raw and heartfelt reminder of the importance of support and resilience in the recovery process. Tune in to hear Duane's inspiring journey from despair to hope.
