David's Path to Recovery: Finding Hope Beyond Belief

I still treat my recovery today a lot like I did in early recovery, almost like it's new every day, you know, I try to reach out and help others.
David’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Growing up as one of the few Catholics in East Tennessee, he often felt isolated and out of place. His first taste of alcohol as an altar boy gave him a fleeting sense of comfort, but it soon spiraled into a battle with addiction. David's journey through multiple treatments in the '80s, under the guise of 'back problems', was more about appeasing his family and friends than seeking genuine help.
It wasn't until his sister 'cut him off' that he faced the harsh reality and sought real change. The pandemic added another layer of isolation, pushing David to rely more on Zoom recovery meetings. Over time, he discovered a higher power that differed vastly from the punitive god of his youth. Nature and spirituality became cornerstones of his ongoing recovery, teaching him to treat each day as a new beginning.
David’s story on the Atheists in Recovery podcast is a powerful testament to the strength found in community, connection, and self-discovery. Tune in to hear how he navigated his way to hope and belief in recovery.
