Sarah Laurel's Inspiring Transformation: From Homelessness to Advocacy

If I can't remain humble and relatable and practice what I preach, I've lost all effect.
Meet Sarah Laurel, a woman whose journey from the depths of addiction to becoming a beacon of hope for others is nothing short of inspiring. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Sarah faced a tumultuous life that led her down the path of addiction. However, her story took a remarkable turn when she decided to get clean and sober. In this episode of 'Emerge. Evolve.
Lead.', Sarah sits down with host Maureen Ross Gemme to share her incredible transformation and the founding of her non-profit organization, Savage Sisters. Sarah's recovery wasn't just about getting sober; it was about channeling her ferocity into something positive. After a traumatic incident where she was thrown out of a window, breaking her hip and leg, she found herself in the hospital wearing a dress with the word 'Savage' printed on it. This moment became a turning point for her.
She looked up the word 'Savage' and found it meant 'ferocious'. This inspired her to pursue sobriety with the same intensity she once chased drugs. Since then, Sarah has not only reconnected with her two children and gotten married but also opened five sober living facilities for women through Savage Sisters. Her advocacy work extends statewide, helping countless individuals in recovery.
Despite facing personal losses, including the deaths of a partner, two best friends, and a cousin to overdoses, Sarah remains steadfast in her mission. In this episode, Sarah talks about the challenges and rewards of working in addiction treatment, the importance of staying humble and relatable, and the impact of giving back. Her story is a testament to the power of recovery and the importance of treating those in recovery with compassion and humanity.
Tune in to hear Sarah's powerful insights and learn how she's making a difference in the lives of many through her relentless advocacy.
