Ice Cream and Inspiration: Kicking Off the Big Texas Rally for Recovery

For us coming apart at the seams are the only ones truly qualified to fight the good fights, because those wound too tightly together cannot accept the vulnerability it takes to face the brokenness we see.
Picture this: a sunny day at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where people from all corners of the country gather for an ice cream social that’s anything but ordinary. This event, hosted by The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, marked the start of The Big Texas Rally for Recovery weekend. It was a day filled with heartfelt speeches and powerful performances that left everyone feeling uplifted and inspired.
Jan McCutchin, a counselor for SMU’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention program, got things rolling with her opening remarks. She was followed by Zachary Thompson, the director of Health and Human Services for Dallas County, who brought his expertise to the table. Neil Scott, the voice behind 'Recovery Coast to Coast,' shared his thoughts on the history of the recovery movement and its key figures, adding a rich layer of context to the event.
The spotlight then turned to Sasha Coles McLean, executive director of Archway Academy in Houston. She spoke passionately about the importance of recovery high schools and alternative peer groups, highlighting how these institutions can be a lifeline for young people. Kyle Pillans, a counselor with Five Star Kids, discussed the Betty Ford Center Children’s Program and its impact on families dealing with addiction.
John Cates, the founder of both Three Oaks Academy and Lifeway International, added his voice to the mix, sharing insights from his work featured in the film 'Generation Found'. Joe Powell, executive director and CEO of the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction in Dallas, rounded out the lineup with his moving words on advocacy and support.
The day concluded with an interactive performance by DaVerse Lounge, featuring Will Richey and Alejandro Perez Jr., accompanied by live music from saxophonist Jason Davis. This episode is a treasure trove of stories and insights that highlight the beauty of recovery and the power of community. If you're looking for a dose of inspiration and a reminder of what’s possible when people come together, this one’s for you.
