Harris S: A Journey from Chaos to Clarity in Alcoholics Anonymous

But wherever I went, my disease came with me and I figured, you know, you get to Colorado, you've got to drink coors because you're in Colorado. And then I, you know, made it through That Year, established my residency and went to The University Of Colorado in boulder and graduated Four Years Later with a degree in political science and sort of a minor in philosophy.
Imagine growing up as one of ten kids with little supervision and a wild streak that seemed uncontainable. That's the backdrop for Harris S, who returns to 'Sober Speak' to recount his rollercoaster ride through addiction and his path to sobriety. In this episode, Harris delves into his chaotic childhood, where chasing a rabbit led him to a profound spiritual awakening that changed his life forever.
He speaks candidly about the 'gift of desperation' that brought him to the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and how the collective strength of the AA community played a crucial role in his recovery. Harris emphasizes that AA is a 'we' program, highlighting how shared experiences can offer hope and support to those struggling with addiction. His journey wasn't just about quitting alcohol; it was about finding serenity, which took him three years of continuous sobriety and addressing deep-rooted issues.
Harris also touches on how writing became a lifeline for him, helping him navigate the turbulence of his upbringing. He shares insights into the importance of forming AA groups and bridging communities, even overcoming language barriers to make AA more inclusive. Harris' story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of sharing one's journey. Tune in to hear how he turned chaos into clarity and found hope in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous.
