Becky Bowers-Lanier: From Lobbyist to Recovery Advocate on Get in the Herd

If you say this to a Virginia politician conservative, oh, it's like Oregon's doing it. I spent not a lot of time in jail, but I spent a little time in jail for my brain disease and as a result I got out and I was fortunate to find a recovery community organization in a recovery residence here at mcshin, where I now work, and was able to find, with the help of the individuals here, that I do have a voice.
What happens when a seasoned lobbyist turns her skills towards advocating for recovery? In this episode of 'Get in the Herd', hosts Nathan Mitchell and Alex Bond chat with Becky Bowers-Lanier, an advocacy consultant focused on healthcare and education in Virginia. As the President of B2L Consulting LLC, Becky has helped countless non-profits navigate the tricky waters of strategic planning, grassroots advocacy, and lobbying.
But her journey took a transformative turn when she began championing substance use disorder and recovery resources in Virginia's General Assembly. Becky shares her unique insights into the importance of building relationships with legislators. She stresses that knowing your lawmakers before you need their help can make all the difference. It's not just about pushing for change when issues arise but maintaining those connections consistently.
The episode dives into the complexities of the criminal justice system and how it often intersects with substance use disorder. Becky argues passionately for recognizing substance use disorder as a brain disorder rather than a policy failure. Listeners will also hear about Becky's personal journey within the recovery community. She found her voice and purpose at McShin Foundation, where she now works and advocates tirelessly.
Her story highlights the power of recovery community organizations and the critical role they play in supporting individuals on their path to sobriety. The conversation also touches on harm reduction advocacy and how storytelling can be a powerful tool in both recovery and lobbying efforts. If you're curious about how advocacy can shape recovery resources or want to understand the legislative side of substance use disorder, this episode offers valuable insights and heartfelt stories.
Becky Bowers-Lanier's journey from lobbyist to recovery advocate is a testament to the impact one person can have when they channel their skills towards a cause they believe in.
