Gerry R.: 32 Years of Sobriety and Counting

The compulsion to drink and drug was removed before I got off my knees, and I've never had anything since then, since that one prayer on my knees.
Gerry R. grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where his life took a sharp turn at the tender age of 15. It started with pot and pills, but soon escalated to intravenous drug use. For the next two decades, Gerry was ensnared in the grip of heroin addiction. A brief respite came through methadone treatment, but his battle with substances was far from over.
Trading one addiction for another, Gerry turned to vodka, marijuana, and cocaine, drinking up to two quarts of vodka daily. By the time he stumbled into an AA club in early 1990, he was a broken man, desperate for change. In this episode of 'AA Recovery Interviews', host Howard L. sits down with Gerry to unpack his tumultuous journey from addiction to sobriety.
The local AA community welcomed him with tough love and unwavering support, guiding him through the steps he needed to take. Despite initial skepticism about the program, Gerry committed to the process, attending meetings and embracing the principles of AA. His gravelly voice and thick New York accent may have been intimidating at first, but his story is one of resilience and transformation.
Throughout the interview, Gerry reflects on the importance of sponsorship, the power of prayer, and the value of community in his recovery journey. He shares how reflecting on the past while staying grounded in the present has been crucial to his 32 years of sobriety. Gerry's tale is a powerful reminder that no matter how deep one's struggles go, there is always a way out. This episode offers a raw and inspiring look into the life-changing impact of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Tune in to hear Gerry's story and find hope and encouragement for your own journey.
