I'm not going back to the hotel business, that this was my purpose: to carry on Brian's legacy of helping people in a disease that took his life, with the stigma that took his life and to change it.
Gary Mendell's life took a heartbreaking turn when his son, Brian, began abusing alcohol and drugs at just 14. Despite Gary's success as a high-profile CEO of an exclusive hotel chain, he couldn't save his son from the grip of addiction. Tragically, Brian lost his battle, leaving Gary to navigate the depths of grief and loss. But instead of being consumed by despair, Gary channeled his pain into purpose.
He founded Shatterproof, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing funding for addiction research and raising awareness about identifying and treating addiction early.
