James Powell: From Religious Trauma to Community Advocate

I believe we're only as sick as our secrets, and that's a scary and dangerous place to be for sure.
Imagine growing up in an environment where your very identity is questioned and suppressed. This is the reality James Powell faced, and in this episode of 'A Queer Chaplain', he shares his deeply personal journey of overcoming religious trauma. As a coach, advocate, and activist for the queer community, James has dedicated his life to building spaces that promote self-love, inclusion, and mental and spiritual health for all.
His mission is clear: to shine a light on the hidden abuses inflicted on LGBTQ+ children in religious communities. Through his podcast 'This Little Light Of Mine', James bravely recounts his experiences with spiritual abuse, religious trauma, sexual abuse, and addiction. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can bring awareness to these issues and inspire others to heal and advocate for change. James' journey hasn't been easy.
He speaks openly about the challenges of addiction and the struggle to find a healthy connection with his parents. Despite these hardships, James has found solace in his faith and has learned to listen to his inner knowing. His story is one of resilience and hope, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of sharing our personal stories and building supportive communities.
Tune in to hear James Powell's inspiring journey and learn how you too can advocate for self-love and inclusion in your own life.
