Leslie Miller: Living and Advocating for Mental Health Awareness
Having a mental illness does not affect my intellect period, so that's a big one, and we've had people come into our center before and talk to us as though we're preschoolers and I always smile at those folks and I make a point of going over, introducing myself to them and perhaps saying something highly intellectual to let them know I'm not at that Four-Year-Old level.
Imagine facing a mental health condition every day while also fighting to change how society views it. That's the reality for Leslie Miller, who shares her deeply personal journey in this episode of 'Stigma Busters'. Hosted by the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board, this episode dives into Leslie's life, her struggles, and her triumphs in mental health advocacy.
Leslie opens up about the startling fact that one in five people in the US experience a mental health condition each year. Despite this, talking about mental health remains taboo in many circles. She candidly discusses her ongoing recovery process, emphasizing that there's no magical 'cure'—it's a continuous journey requiring support and understanding. Leslie highlights the power of peer support and advocacy groups like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), sharing how they have been instrumental in her recovery.
She doesn't shy away from discussing the challenges, particularly the stigma surrounding eating disorders and the difficulties in accessing treatment during the pandemic. Throughout the episode, Leslie calls for more education and compassion, urging listeners to be kinder to themselves and others. Her message is clear: breaking down mental health stigmas is essential for a more understanding and supportive community. This episode is not just informative; it's a heartfelt call to action for anyone touched by mental health issues.
