He tried everything to fit in, even cutting off the Nike swoosh from his t-shirt to glue it onto his shorts. But these efforts were never enough. Turning to drugs and crime as a coping mechanism, Matt's life spiraled until he found himself behind bars. One of the toughest periods in Matt's life was dealing with his mother's severe diabetes, which led to the amputation of her leg.
He faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether to honor her wish for peace or fight to keep her alive. With the support of his Alcoholics Anonymous group, Matt navigated this painful chapter, learning to take responsibility for his actions and make amends for past wrongs. The turning point in Matt's journey came through Alcoholics Anonymous, where he discovered the power of spirituality.
He speaks about connecting with a higher power in a way that’s personal and meaningful to him, saying, 'I get a direct contact, yeah, with my higher power today, you know, and I don't define him too, I get to define it as well'. This newfound spirituality helped him rebuild his life. Matt’s story is one of resilience and hope, showing that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with the right support and inner strength.
