Rich Moroski’s Journey: Surviving the Nightmare of Straight Inc.

There was no point that you could not think about straight. And in my mind, when I first got in, my voice was like a thunderstorm: you got to get up. And then I, intuitively, one day my voice became a whisper and that straight voice became the thunderstorm and it drowned out every other thought I had in my mind to where I was always in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Imagine being a teenager and finding yourself in a place that promises to help but instead turns your world upside down. That’s what happened to Rich Moroski during his time at Straight Inc., an adolescent drug rehabilitation program notorious for its abusive practices. In this gripping episode of 'Surviving Straight Inc.', Rich takes us through his experiences from 1982 to 1983, shedding light on the harsh realities of the program.
Rich talks about the ‘No Talking Behind Backs’ rule, the confrontations, and the restraints that were all part of the daily grind. He describes how the program’s obsession with honesty led to psychological games that messed with his head. To cope, Rich created an alter ego, burying his true self and becoming an enforcer who inflicted the same abuse he was subjected to on new arrivals. But it wasn’t just the rules and the confrontations that left scars.
Rich opens up about the food punishments and how the first phase of the program played mind games with him. He shares how he survived by conforming to the program’s expectations, earning what was known as the 'Straight shine'—a façade of happiness and compliance. This episode isn’t just a recounting of past horrors; it’s a powerful testament to resilience. Rich’s story offers a sobering look at how such programs can leave lasting trauma.
Whether you’re interested in the history of rehabilitation programs or seeking to understand their impact on individuals, this episode provides valuable insights. Tune in to hear Rich’s chilling account and gain a deeper understanding of the dark side of adolescent rehabilitation programs.
