Khadi's Mission: Building Sober Communities for People of Color

Sometimes we just treat sobriety as a dirty word, and it's very important, like when I talk about sobriety, to not treat that or treat drinking as something dirty...
Imagine being a lawyer in New York City, surrounded by a culture that normalizes alcohol at every turn. That's the reality Khadi faced, and it's what led her to create the Sober Black Girls Club. In this episode of 'Recovery Rocks', hosts Lisa Smith and Tawny Lara sit down with Khadi to discuss her journey from high-functioning addiction to sobriety and the incredible work she's doing to support people of color in their recovery journeys.
Khadi opens up about the challenges she faced in the legal world, where drinking is often seen as part of the job. She and Lisa delve into how this culture impacts those trying to stay sober and the importance of creating supportive, alcohol-free communities. They share personal stories and insights that will resonate with anyone who's felt the pressure to drink in social or professional settings.
The conversation then shifts to the resources and support offered by the Sober Black Girls Club. From online workshops to mentorship programs, Khadi explains how her organization is making a difference. She and Tawny discuss the hurdles they've faced in normalizing sobriety and breaking down the stigma associated with addiction. But it's not all serious talk.
The episode wraps up with 'The Music Minute', where they chat about their love for Drake and his music, adding a fun twist to an already engaging conversation. Whether you're in recovery yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode offers valuable insights and a sense of community that's both comforting and inspiring.
