Laura Fullenkamp: Tackling Mental Health Stigma in the Justice System

Within the sequential intercept model, we're able to look at each of these stages, from preventing their involvement to the criminal justice system, through their interactions with law enforcement when they're first booked into the jail to when they're reentering back into the community into treatment, and we really identify what are the best practices at each of those points.
When it comes to mental health in the criminal justice system, stigma often plays a significant role in shaping outcomes. In this episode of 'Stigma Busters', Laura Fullenkamp, the criminal justice and special projects manager at The Wood County ADAMHS Board, sheds light on this critical issue. With a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision, Laura brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.
She discusses her educational background and how it informs her current work, particularly in securing grants to launch new community programs. Laura introduces listeners to the sequential intercept model, a strategic framework designed to help clients navigate the criminal justice system more effectively. She emphasizes the importance of mental health first aid and the concept of 'warm handoffs' for individuals transitioning back into the community.
These handoffs are crucial for ensuring that clients receive continuous support, reducing the risk of relapse or reoffending. Throughout the conversation, Laura provides a detailed look at the unique challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues within the justice system. She explains how the Wood County ADAMHS Board is actively working to address these challenges, aiming to break the cycle of stigma that often hinders effective treatment and support.
This episode offers valuable insights into the intersection of mental health and criminal justice, highlighting the importance of resources and community support. Whether you're directly affected by these issues or simply interested in understanding them better, Laura's perspective is both enlightening and empowering.
