Megan Sharkey on Mental Health Recovery and the Role of Community Support

But yeah, if I did not have my own experience of recovery, there would be no way I could do this work, and especially sustainably, because I think I do need to be able to reflect back on my own journey and my own struggles in order to, kind of like, keep going, because sometimes in my recovery I know that I can't really see the light at the end of the tunnel in that specific moment.
Ever wondered how personal experiences shape one's ability to advocate for mental health recovery? In this episode of 'Dissect & Connect', Megan Sharkey, the REACH Program Director for VOCAL, shares her own recovery journey and offers a glimpse into the transformative power of community support. VOCAL, a peer-run organization in Virginia, focuses on education, awareness, and advocacy for those in recovery.
Megan's candid discussion covers the wide-reaching impact of COVID-19 on behavioral health, the ups and downs of social media, and the essential role of self-care. She also touches on the importance of inclusive recovery groups, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. As Megan puts it, 'If I did not have my own experience of recovery, there would be no way I could do this work, and especially sustainably'.
This episode is a heartfelt conversation about turning personal struggles into a force for good, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in mental health advocacy.
