Liz Dozier: Championing Youth and Equity with Chicago Beyond

I think what's so beautiful about your story is that you saw something beyond something else because of your personal experience.
Picture this: three years after losing her devout Catholic mother, Molly Carroll sits down with Liz Dozier, a woman whose mother was a nun and whose father was incarcerated. Liz, the Founder & CEO of Chicago Beyond, is on a mission to ensure that every young person has the chance to live a full and free life. Since 2016, her organization has invested over $40 million to tackle barriers in education, youth safety, health, and wellness.
Liz's journey is as compelling as it is inspiring. In 2009, she took on the role of principal at Fenger High School, known then as one of Chicago's most violent and underperforming schools. Liz saw firsthand how trauma outside the classroom impacted students' lives and learning. Her experiences have deeply influenced her approach to service and advocacy. In this episode, Molly and Liz dive into the power of narrative healing and how personal stories can drive social change.
They discuss the importance of justice work over charity and why systemic change in education is crucial. The tragic story of Darian Albert serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for action. Liz's dedication to uplifting others is evident as she shares her journey of founding Chicago Beyond. She emphasizes the significance of believing in oneself and finding joy and laughter even amidst serious work.
If you're looking for an inspiring conversation about making a real difference, this episode is a must-listen.
