Joe Beliveau: A Journey from Darkness to Advocacy

I appreciate that I can laugh at it now, you know, and I can laugh at everything that I've done right at myself, right, right, but it's hard to, when people are still going through it, to make it a joke for them.
Imagine stepping into the world of addiction at a time when most people are settling into their careers. That’s exactly what happened to Joe Beliveau. In his late 30s, Joe began experimenting with cocaine during club nights, leading to a rapid spiral that cost him everything he had worked for.
In this gripping episode of the Say Know Podcast, Joe opens up to host Matt Ingrouille about his path from addiction to recovery, and the deep-seated issues that fueled his substance use. Joe’s story isn’t your typical tale of early-life drug experimentation; instead, it’s a powerful narrative that includes childhood sexual abuse and struggles with sexual identity as significant factors in his addiction journey.
Joe’s candidness offers a raw and real look at how these experiences shaped his life choices and challenges. But Joe’s story doesn’t end in despair. After overcoming an addiction to crystal meth, he turned his life around by dedicating himself to helping others. He became a member of Alberta Addicts Who Educate and Advocate Responsibly (AAWEAR), a peer-led group committed to street outreach and keeping drug users safe in Calgary.
Through AAWEAR, Joe found a new purpose, using his experiences to educate and advocate for those still struggling. This episode isn’t just about Joe’s personal battles; it’s also a testament to the power of community support in the fight against addiction. Joe’s involvement with AAWEAR highlights how grassroots efforts can make a significant difference in people’s lives. If you’re looking for a story that combines heartbreak, resilience, and hope, this episode is a must-listen.
It sheds light on the complexities of addiction and the importance of support systems in recovery.
