We were able to get $100 million in the budget. So the good news of that is that that is the most that Indiana has ever put into the budget for behavioral health. The bad news of that is that we really need more than twice that much. And in terms of going forward and how it's going to affect people, our hope is that with Senate and old Act 1, we're going to build an infrastructure like we haven't had in Indiana before that didn't wax and wane based on funding or needs or crisis that was always there when people needed it.
How does advocacy shape the future of mental health care? In this episode of 'Beyond Substance', hosts Dean Babcock and Jody Miller take a deep dive into this question with two key figures from Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI). Stephen McCaffrey, CEO, and Stephanie Anderson, COO, bring their wealth of experience and passion to the conversation, revealing how advocacy efforts are paving the way for improved mental health services in Indiana.
Stephen McCaffrey, a veteran in public policy advocacy, shares his journey and the legislative milestones that have significantly impacted the mental health landscape. From receiving the prestigious Webster-Kipfer Award to his numerous appointments and board memberships, McCaffrey's dedication to advocacy is evident. He discusses the allocation of $100 million towards behavioral health in Indiana, a monumental step forward in addressing mental health and addiction issues. Stephanie Anderson’s story is equally compelling.
Transitioning from a ballet dancer to a licensed clinical social worker, she highlights the importance of breaking down barriers and reducing stigma through advocacy. Her personal experiences add a unique perspective on the challenges and triumphs faced in the field of mental health care. This episode isn't just about discussing problems; it's about showcasing solutions and encouraging active participation. McCaffrey and Anderson emphasize the need for ongoing support from the community to sustain advocacy and educational initiatives.
They invite listeners to join the Indiana Addictions Issues Coalition and MHAI in their mission to elevate mental health care standards. Whether you're directly affected by mental health issues or simply want to contribute to a positive change, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable steps. Tune in to understand how your voice can make a difference in shaping mental health policies and supporting recovery efforts in Indiana.
