Dr. Nora Volkow on the Future of NIDA and Drug Addiction Science

So I ended up in Nyu for that and, of course, immediately as I started my residency in psychiatry and concomitant with that, I started to work on research projects to investigate whether there were changes in the brain metabolism, which is a good marker of brain activity in people suffering from schizophrenia.
Ever wondered how the words we use shape our understanding of addiction? In this episode of 'High Truths on Drugs and Addiction', Dr. Roneet Lev chats with Dr. Nora Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Dr. Volkow, a pioneer in using brain imaging to study addiction, discusses her hopes for NIDA's future, including possibly changing its name to better reflect its mission.
She also tackles pressing questions like whether people should need a prescription to buy vape pens and what science says about labeling marijuana products. Dr. Volkow's work has been crucial in proving that addiction is a brain disorder, altering the dopamine system and affecting areas involved in reward and self-control. In this engaging conversation, she sheds light on the latest research and innovative treatments for substance use disorders.
