The tax that is probably a little harder to understand that I think we could also talk to our children about is this idea of FICA tax, right? This whole Federal Insurance Contribution Act of 1935. Thank you, President Roosevelt. And what FICA is designed to do. I mean, that's the tax that comes out of the paycheck that covers Social Security and Medicare. The reality is as much as we think that that's our own Social Security and Medicare, it's really what's paying for today's Social Security and Medicare recipient.
Remember the excitement of getting your first paycheck? That thrill quickly turns to confusion when you realize Uncle Sam has taken a chunk of your hard-earned money. In this episode of Financial Sobriety, hosts Matthew Grishman and Jim Gebhardt tackle this very issue. They dive into the nitty-gritty of explaining payroll deductions to your kids. Ever wondered how to break down the concept of taxes to a teenager who's just started working? Matthew and Jim have got you covered.
They talk about the importance of 'paying yourself first' and why understanding FICA tax is crucial. Through personal stories and practical advice, they show how to instill healthy financial habits in your children from a young age. If you're a parent looking to empower your kids with financial wisdom, this episode is a must-listen.
