I moved from the pre-contemplation to contemplation. And in that moment, I moved into preparation. I started researching, what can I do? And back then, Deb, we're talking 2016, there was not a lot of choices. There was no one like me to my knowledge at that time. And so I went the traditional route. I went to AA, which is an amazing program. I want to give so much honor to the program for who it serves, but for me, it wasn't a good fit. I wasn't an alcoholic. I wasn't severely abusing. Abusing, yes, not severely abusing. And there was a big difference. And I realized after being in AA for several months, it just wasn't a fit for me. I didn't need recovery. What I needed was discovery.
Ever find yourself wondering if your drinking habits are a bit too much, but not quite at the point of calling yourself an alcoholic? In this episode of 'Thriving Alcohol-Free with Mocktail Mom', Deb chats with Kari Schwear from Gray Tonic about this very dilemma. Kari's journey from questioning her own drinking to becoming a coach for others stuck in this 'gray area' is both inspiring and enlightening.
She opens up about her pivotal 'enough' moment back in 2016, which set her on a path to sobriety and helping others do the same. The conversation touches on the importance of recognizing red flags and the critical role our inner voices play in our drinking habits. Kari emphasizes the need to challenge limiting beliefs and adopt new thinking patterns to overcome excessive drinking.
The episode also dives into the social implications of choosing not to drink and the evolving stigma around non-drinkers. Kari encourages listeners to support businesses that offer non-alcoholic options, advocating for a shift in social norms. This episode is a must-listen for anyone feeling stuck in the gray area of drinking, offering hope, practical advice, and a fresh perspective on living alcohol-free.
