I genuinely enjoy every single day to the fullest. I spend that time with God alone. So today I don't listen to the gangster rap I used to listen to. And the only thing that I know for sure is that when I'm doing these things, my mind is well.
Melissa Hubenak's story is one of remarkable transformation. At 41, this mother of three has faced more than her share of life's harshest challenges. Growing up in a household marred by physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse, Melissa's early years were anything but easy. Both her parents struggled with alcohol addiction, yet she never saw their habits as a reason for her own substance use.
Instead, she embraced partying and experimenting with drugs and alcohol as a form of escapism and fun. But the summer before her senior year changed everything. A severe back injury introduced her to the world of prescription painkillers, courtesy of a doctor who became her most reliable drug dealer. By 21, Melissa was on fentanyl patches and oxycontin, her addiction spiraling out of control. Her first brush with the law, resulting in a felony charge, surprisingly turned into a blessing.
The judge's sentence of probation and methadone maintenance marked the beginning of her long journey to recovery. Melissa's story takes another turn when she marries the love of her life and becomes a mother to three beautiful boys. However, her battle with addiction was far from over. Through sheer resilience and the support of an understanding judge, Melissa began to reclaim her life.
In this episode of the Sobertown Podcast, hosted by Drifter, Melissa opens up about her tumultuous past and the hard-fought path to sobriety. Her candid account is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, there is hope. Her journey is not just about overcoming addiction but also about finding strength in vulnerability and the will to rebuild a life filled with love and purpose.
