Turning the Tide: Dayton's Battle Against Opioid Overdoses

We want a healthy community, but we need to meet them where they are, and that's what motivational interviewing and that's what the mediation center does, and that's where we got the term conversation, because the mediation center, we have a conversation with each person if they would like that.
Picture this: a city once plagued by one of the highest opioid overdose rates in the nation now sees a dramatic turnaround. That's the story of Dayton, Ohio, as explored in this episode of Cover2 Resources. Host Greg McNeil sits down with Dr. Mary Huber, co-founder of Conversations for Change, to uncover how grassroots efforts are making a monumental difference. Back in 2017, Montgomery County, anchored by Dayton, saw a staggering 548 overdose deaths.
Fast forward to 2018, and that number plummeted by 54%. What sparked this life-saving shift? The New York Times spent days in Dayton, interviewing public health officials, police, doctors, nurses, and treatment providers to find out. Conversations for Change is at the heart of this transformation. Held every other month, these events offer more than just a meal. They provide a lifeline—connecting people with treatment providers, offering Narcan training, and facilitating peer support. The key?
Meeting people where they are and using motivational interviewing to open up pathways to recovery. Even law enforcement, once viewed with fear, now plays a crucial role in these efforts. Their support has been instrumental in helping individuals access the treatment they need. The success of Conversations for Change has inspired similar programs, creating a ripple effect of hope and recovery throughout the community. This episode sheds light on these innovative solutions and the challenges faced by community-driven initiatives.
