When you're in segregation, you don't get near nothing or no one. So I'd um, I've been in the, I've been in the training paddock preparing myself for it, and you know, the first time I got off the gear, you know, automatically it was just coming out of my mouth. And um, and in that jail I had blokes tell me about their own abuse. So, you know, from the early stages- and that's when you know, the dream of the voice of a survival was born
Russell Manser’s life reads like a gritty novel, but it’s all too real. Growing up in Western Sydney, he was surrounded by figures who glamorized a life of crime. By the time he was an adult, Russell had spent 23 years in various jails across NSW, NT, and QLD. But his story isn't just about his time behind bars; it's about the heavy secret he carried with him—being a survivor of institutional child sexual abuse.
For 30 years, Russell kept this trauma to himself until he found the courage to speak out, not just for his own healing, but to support others with similar experiences.
