Elizabeth Ahkivagak: From Addiction to Advocacy in Indigenous Communities

It's obviously not an easy thing to talk about, but it is something that should be talked about, because once you get through those periods and you look back, it's so worth it to go on through life and accomplish the things that you want to and look back and realize like I didn't take my life and it was worthwhile.
Elizabeth Ahkivagak has a story that’s as diverse as it is inspiring. Hailing from Utqiagvik, Alaska, Elizabeth is Iñupiaq and Mexican, blending two rich cultures into her life’s tapestry. On this episode of The Anonymous Eskimo Podcast, hosted by Ralph Sara, Elizabeth opens up about her journey through alcoholism and addiction, and how she found her way to sobriety. She’s not just sharing her struggles; she’s using her experiences to advocate for mental health and indigenous rights.
Elizabeth wears many hats—she’s a nonprofit accountant, a self-defense teacher for Missing and Murdered No More, an artist with her own venture, The Knotty Bead, and a full-time student at Penn State University majoring in Energy and Sustainability Policy. Talk about juggling! But beyond these roles, what stands out is her commitment to breaking the stigma around mental health and addiction within indigenous communities. Through her candid storytelling, Elizabeth highlights the crucial role that cultural identity plays in recovery.
She emphasizes the importance of sharing one’s story as a way to heal and help others. Whether you're struggling with addiction or simply seeking inspiration, Elizabeth's journey offers valuable insights into resilience and hope. Tune in to hear how Elizabeth balances her multifaceted life while staying true to her roots and advocating for those who need it most.
Her story is a powerful reminder that no matter how tough the battle, there’s always a path to recovery and a way to make a difference.
