Imagine being an avid outdoorsman, only to have your world turned upside down by a life-altering accident. That's exactly what happened to Dylan Lesselyoung. At 18, a car accident that was also a suicide attempt left him with a C2/C3 spinal cord injury, rendering him a quadriplegic. For years, Dylan grappled with the loss of his mobility and the activities he once loved. But then, he discovered adaptive equipment that opened up new avenues for outdoor adventures.
From hunting deer with an adaptive gun mount to Walleye fishing with an electric reel, Dylan found ways to reconnect with nature and his passions. In this episode of 'Fortitude', hosted by Heather Kittelson, Dylan shares his journey from despair to empowerment. He talks about founding Wheelchair Adventures, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities enjoy outdoor sports through adaptive equipment. Dylan's story isn't just about overcoming physical limitations; it's about mental resilience too.
He opens up about his struggles with mental health, the importance of taking life one day at a time, and his motto: 'adapt and overcome'. If you or someone you know is navigating life with a disability, Dylan's story offers a beacon of hope and practical advice for embracing new possibilities.
