Drag and Sobriety: Stories from the Drag & Spirituality Summit 2022

Find your fun and enjoy it to the fullest, because we only have this life to live and it's important that we answer our call, whatever that call is, and do what we have been put on this planet to do.
Imagine stepping into a world where glitter meets sobriety, and spirituality intertwines with self-expression. That's exactly what you'll find in this episode featuring the Drag While Sober Panel at the Drag & Spirituality Summit 2022. Hosted by Bonnie Violet, this panel brings together voices from the drag community who have navigated their journeys of sobriety while embracing their drag personas.
Meet Angel, also known as Linda Summers, a San Francisco-based drag performer who uses her platform to spread messages of love and empowerment. As a first-generation Guatemalan, she faces the unique challenge of showing her family that drag is a valid and beautiful form of expression. Then there's Sue Trowtower, a regular performer at The Monster Show and The Mascara Show—San Francisco's sobriety-focused drag event.
Sue's journey through sobriety has allowed her to fully explore her creative side and support local LGBTQ+ nonprofits. Moderated by Imani Recovery, originally from Virginia, the panel delves into how sobriety has shaped their experiences in the drag world. Imani shares how fun turned into struggle when drugs like crystal meth entered the picture, but emphasizes that sobriety brought back the joy in performing. One of the standout themes is the role of spirituality in drag.
Angel talks about how her performances are not just acts but spiritual expressions that convey messages of resurrection and empowerment. Sue finds a meditative state through her performances, making drag a spiritual practice for her. Challenges are inevitable in this intersection of sobriety and drag. Performing in bars can be tough, but Sue leans on her faith to navigate these spaces. Angel highlights the importance of shedding old beliefs to embrace new experiences fully.
But it’s not all serious; the panelists remind us that fun is a crucial part of both sobriety and drag. Imani encourages everyone to find joy and not take themselves too seriously. This episode is a celebration of finding joy in self-expression while maintaining sobriety. Tune in to hear these inspiring stories and discover how sobriety can enhance the art of drag, making it a richer, more fulfilling experience.
