From Rave Scene to Resilience: Dr. Barbara Fornssler's Story
Each node sort of has its own membership process and how they're engaging their community so that they're reflecting that local geography, right, and those local mores and norms, or customs, as we call them.
What happens when the thrill of the rave scene collides with the harsh realities of addiction? Dr. Barbara Fornssler knows this all too well. Growing up with an alcoholic father and a hardworking mother, Barb faced challenges early on. At 17, she realized she was gay and felt the heavy weight of stigma in the 90s. The Vancouver rave scene became her escape, a place where she thought she found 'home'.
But that home quickly turned into a nightmare as weed led to MDMA, and soon meth took over her life. She even started stealing from her family to feed her addiction. It was a wake-up call when she contemplated dropping out of school to continue her destructive lifestyle. Thankfully, Barb decided to turn her life around.
In this episode of Hard Knox Talks, she shares how she redirected her path and became a powerful advocate for equity and diverse perspectives in policy-making. Tune in to hear Barb's compelling journey from addiction to advocacy, and how she uses her experiences to inspire and support others.
