Dopamine Decoded: Understanding Its Role Beyond Pleasure
Dopamine is involved in learning attention and memory when we do something and it's beneficial in some way and if we're interested in it- and that's one of the things that I teach when I teach adult learning theory- if people are not interested in something, they are not going to be able to pay attention nearly as well, and it's likely not going to move from short-term to long-term memory, because you have to care about what you're learning.
Ever thought dopamine was just about pleasure? Think again. In this eye-opening episode of the 'Counselor Toolbox Podcast with DocSnipes', Dr. Dawn-Elise Snipes unpacks the many roles of dopamine in our lives. From sparking motivation and coordinating muscles to influencing mood and wakefulness, dopamine does it all. Dr. Snipes breaks down how an imbalance in this crucial neurotransmitter can affect both your mind and body, diving into the nitty-gritty of its functions and its impact on mental health and addiction.
She also explores the intricate dance between dopamine and serotonin, shedding light on how these chemicals work together to shape our emotional landscape. For those curious about treatment, Dr. Snipes offers a deep dive into how medications can alter dopamine levels and shares practical tips for naturally boosting this vital chemical. Whether you're a counselor, someone dealing with addiction, or just fascinated by brain chemistry, this episode is packed with insights that could change the way you think about dopamine.
