Kelly Gunther: The Comeback Kid's Journey from Heartbreak to Olympic Glory

It’s not an easy road and there will be days you will not want to get out of bed and face your challenges… but through your struggles, your mess will become your message.
Ever wondered what it takes to bounce back from life’s toughest knocks? Kelly Gunther, an Olympian skater dubbed the 'Comeback Kid', knows all about it. In this episode of 'Cracking Open with Molly Carroll', Kelly shares her gripping story of resilience and determination. From facing a learning disability and an absent alcoholic father to nearly losing her foot in a horrific skating accident, Kelly's life has been anything but smooth. Yet, she rose above it all to achieve her dreams.
Starting her skating journey at just six years old, Kelly's passion for roller skating eventually led her to the ice rink. But her path was riddled with obstacles. During the 2010 Olympic trials, she faced a heartbreaking setback when she was bumped from the team after another skater was granted a re-skate. Then came the devastating injury in March 2010, when a fall on the ice resulted in a double-compound fracture that almost severed her foot from her leg.
The road to recovery was grueling, but Kelly's spirit remained unbroken. Through intensive rehab and sheer willpower, Kelly made an astonishing comeback. By November 2011, she had set two personal best times and earned a spot on the World Cup team. Her journey culminated in 2014 when she achieved her dream of competing in the Olympics. Throughout the episode, Kelly emphasizes the power of self-belief and positive self-talk in overcoming adversity.
Kelly also touches on the role of parents in an athlete's journey, urging them to support their children without becoming overly invested in their achievements. Her story is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience and hope. If you’re looking for inspiration to tackle your own challenges, Kelly Gunther’s story is a must-listen.
