Riding the Waves: Darryl 'Flea' Virotsko's Surfing and Sobriety Journey
Suddenly you realize how much bigger and more amazing and more rad a sober life of recovery can be than sitting in your house collecting driftwood or, like me, playing the same guitar lick for hours in a row.
Imagine riding the world's biggest waves while battling inner demons. That's the life of Darryl 'Flea' Virotsko, a three-time Mavericks surfing champ who joins host Wes Geer on this episode of Rock to Recovery. Flea's story begins with his parents' divorce at age eight, leading him to Santa Cruz, where he immersed himself in the surfing culture. By his mid-teens, he was living a life of freedom and extreme behavior, diving into psychedelic drug use along the way.
One memorable experience saw him surfing Mavericks high on acid, which sparked a dangerous craving for more. His journey took a near-fatal turn in 2008 when he fell off a cliff, an incident that led to an intervention and his path to sobriety. Today, Flea dedicates his life to helping others through his nonprofit, Fleahab, teaching recovering addicts how to surf and embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Tune in to hear Flea's raw and inspiring tale of overcoming addiction and giving back to the community.
