Finding Calm Amidst Chaos: Dr. Anna Baranowsky on Compassion Fatigue and PTSD
I'm really a strong believer that we have to have a readiness inside of ourselves and a big piece of that readiness comes from this finding calm, and until we can really do that and demonstrate it to ourselves and practice it regularly so that when we really need it, we have access to it, I don't think people are ready and, you know, I don't think that we want to just push somebody into reviewing their trauma, because that in itself can be traumatizing when we're not stabilized.
Imagine carrying the weight of others' pain day in and day out. That's the reality for many caregivers and professionals, and it's a topic that Dr. Anna Baranowsky knows all too well. In this episode of 'Harm Reduction Radio - HAMS', host Kenneth Anderson sits down with Dr. Baranowsky, the Executive Director of the Traumatology Institute, to discuss the often-overlooked issues of Compassion Fatigue and PTSD.
Drawing from her extensive experience and her books 'Trauma Practice' and 'What Is PTSD?: 3 Steps To Healing Trauma', Dr. Baranowsky shares practical advice on how to cope with these challenges. She highlights the importance of self-compassion and grounding exercises as tools for building resilience. Through her compassionate lens, Dr. Baranowsky explains the frozen response and dissociation that can follow traumatic events, offering actionable steps for stabilization and recovery.
She also delves into the roles of loneliness and connection in the healing process, providing a holistic approach to treating Compassion Fatigue. Whether you're a caregiver, a professional, or someone dealing with trauma, this episode offers valuable insights and practical exercises to help you find calm amidst chaos.
