I mean, it's really difficult to believe that remorse when, two years later, they relapse again. But he finally got sober in 2008. It was pretty miraculous, but you don't know it at the time. You just think, 'Okay, this is another treatment that you're going to go through.'
Imagine growing up in a home where both parents are battling alcohol addiction. That's the reality Colleen Schaeffel faced in Minnesota. Her father's addiction spiraled out of control, costing him his job, home, and family connections. Yet, Colleen never gave up on him. Over nearly two decades, she made countless trips to detox and rehab centers, all while maintaining her own mental health and strength through mindfulness and setting healthy boundaries. Her story is one of resilience and unwavering compassion.
Despite the chaos at home, Colleen excelled academically, built a successful medical career, and raised three wonderful children. She found meaning by sharing her experiences through writing and counseling others, even publishing a memoir titled 'Do You Believe in Me: A Memoir of Addiction, Hope, and Family Bonds'. Colleen's journey shows that with hope, resilience, and the love of family, it's possible to overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
