Cody L.: One Year Sober and Discovering His Own Higher Power

The god of my understanding is an old guy who sits on a bench and watches traffic go by and he'll let me get in a car accident All Day Long. And he'll let me know that and show me that.
Ever wondered what it's like to find your own path to sobriety in your twenties? Cody L. joins the Recovery Edge podcast to share his raw and real journey from addiction to recovery. Growing up, Cody had a seemingly good childhood, but nights often ended with tears. His first brush with alcohol happened on the 4th of July at his girlfriend's house, leading to a blackout he’s glad he doesn’t remember.
What started as a one-time event quickly spiraled into daily drinking, unnoticed by his family until it was almost too late. Cody's turning point came when he drunkenly called into work and his supervisor suggested he just go back to bed. That question struck a chord, making him realize he needed help. With his family's encouragement, Cody attended meetings for a year, though he initially struggled with the god-centric approach.
However, he found inspiration in the stories shared by retired members and eventually discovered his own higher power—an old man sitting on a bench watching traffic. Cody believes this higher power guides him, especially during life's tricky moments, like avoiding accidents. His advice for those grappling with addiction is simple but profound: find a supportive community, get a sponsor, and take it one day at a time.
This episode is a testament to the power of personal discovery and community support in the recovery journey.
