Christina Kimbrough: Finding Sobriety Amidst a Pandemic's Chaos
I don't want to be isolated... Like, don't you want to be home alone drinking during a pandemic? You said you kind of like... You have to adapt...
Imagine growing up in a strict environment with no TV, radio, or media, and dealing with childhood abuse. That’s the early life of Christina Kimbrough, who hails from Cleveland, Ohio. Her story is a rollercoaster of anxiety, panic disorders, and eventually, alcoholism. Christina didn't start drinking until she was 21, but once she did, it quickly spiraled out of control. By 25, she was diagnosed with a panic disorder, which led to suicidal thoughts.
She hit rock bottom in January 2020 and knew she needed help. Moving back home was the first step, but it wasn't until the COVID-19 pandemic hit that she truly began her recovery journey. Christina entered Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) treatment during the first week of lockdown. The pandemic brought its own set of challenges and opportunities. The isolation made it tempting to turn to alcohol, but virtual recovery meetings provided a lifeline.
Christina found strength in her faith and the community she built online. She leaned on spirituality, self-reflection, and the support of others to maintain her sobriety. Sharing her story has been a crucial part of her journey. By opening up about her struggles with addiction and mental health, Christina aims to break down the stigma and shame surrounding these issues. She believes that vulnerability and connection are key to recovery.
Her story is a beacon of hope, showing that even in the darkest times, there is always a way forward.
