Being a part of this fellowship and a lot of people that know me know that I'm probably going to have a smile on my face. But, you know, when I went to my first meeting, I was told by the second guy, the licensed therapist, he said, you should go to the dark side, 630 a.m. meeting... And at that time you had one room straight down the hallway and the dark side meeting was to the left, dark side meeting that always keep the doors open. That's like one of the, you know, policies of that meeting is we never close the doors because we don't want somebody to not come in because they don't feel welcome.
Chris W. takes us on a raw and honest journey through his battle with alcoholism, starting from his first drink at 17. Despite excelling in sports, especially golf, Chris struggled to fit in after his family moved to Texas during his senior year of high school. Alcohol quickly became his crutch, providing the comfort and camaraderie he desperately sought. College and early career years saw Chris's drinking escalate, accompanied by marijuana and later, cocaine use.
His growing addictions overshadowed his talents and ambitions, leading to a life spiraling out of control. By age 29, Chris's life had deteriorated to the point where his golf handicap paled in comparison to the handicap created by his alcoholism. It was then that he found Alcoholics Anonymous. In this episode, Chris shares how he embraced AA's formula for sobriety, transforming his life over the past 18 years.
He opens up about the profound impact of service work within AA and the invaluable lessons learned through the program. Chris's story is a testament to resilience and unwavering commitment, offering hope and inspiration to anyone grappling with addiction. Tune in to hear how community, service, and determination have shaped Chris's fulfilling life in recovery.
