Charles M Henderson Jr: From Addiction to Ivy League Success
Just because you have veered off the straight and narrow, so to speak, does not mean that you have no honor within you whatsoever.
How does a teenage heroin addict from the projects end up with a Harvard MBA? Charles M Henderson Jr. has lived that story. Growing up in Tuckahoe, New York, Charles faced more than his fair share of challenges. With a mother who was pregnant with his brother when he was just two years old and parents who didn't have high levels of education, life wasn't easy. But Charles had something special—a relentless drive to succeed.
In this episode of The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast, hosted by Ashley Loeb Blassingame, Charles opens up about his extraordinary journey. From feeling like an outsider and battling a distorted self-image to entering drug rehab and finding a community that understood him, Charles' path was anything but straightforward. He shares how his time in a therapeutic community run by its own members was pivotal in his recovery. After completing the drug program, Charles didn't stop there.
He went on to attend Wharton and then Harvard, although he often felt like an imposter. Despite these feelings, he pushed through and built a successful career in finance, working with leaders at Citibank, Standard Bank, The World Bank, and more. His story is a powerful reminder that hard work and determination can overcome even the toughest obstacles. Charles also highlights the importance of community and healthy relationships in his journey.
He has maintained lifelong friendships with people who knew him before rehab and emphasizes the value of listening and developing meaningful connections. Now residing in South Africa, Charles dedicates his time to teaching others how to build healthy relationships and find joy in recovery.
