Carolyn Costin's Journey: From Anorexia to Healing Others

I feel like my recovery became more and more solid over the years, because, as I'm talking to other people about body image, about what's really important in life, about not valuing your image over your substance, about the relentless obsession with fat and weight and all counting calories and all that in our culture, as I would help my clients.
What if your greatest struggle became the foundation for your life's work? That's exactly what happened to Carolyn Costin. In this episode of Steppin' Out Radio, Carolyn, a highly respected eating disorder clinician, opens up about her personal battle with anorexia in her twenties. Her recovery didn't just change her life; it set her on a path to help countless others. Carolyn's story is one of resilience and transformation. After overcoming her eating disorder, she became a teacher and psychotherapist.
Her first success in treating an eating disorder patient in 1979 revealed her true calling. Fast forward to 1996, and Carolyn founded Monte Nido, the first licensed residential eating disorder treatment facility in a home-like setting. But Carolyn's journey doesn't stop there. Throughout the episode, she dives into the complexities of eating disorders, explaining the neuroscience behind them and the challenges that come with treatment.
She emphasizes the importance of changing one's self-image and how a cost-benefit analysis can aid in recovery. Carolyn's humanistic approach to treatment has been groundbreaking, and she continues to train eating disorder coaches today. The episode also tackles the pervasive issue of diet culture and society's obsession with weight and appearance. Carolyn sheds light on how these societal pressures can contribute to eating disorders and what can be done to combat them.
This episode isn't just about the challenges; it's about the triumphs and ongoing journey towards healing. Carolyn's story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible and that one person's dedication can make a world of difference.
