Championing Identities: BIPOC Queers in Recovery

We have to lose our lives for them to even speak up about shit that's harming us, for them to even acknowledge us the hurt and the harm and the pain, to even like so-called fight for us to have equal rights and justice and the same stuff that they have, that they literally have to watch us die.
Imagine trying to recover from addiction while feeling that the system meant to help you doesn't see or support your full identity. That's the reality for many BIPOC queers, and it's the focus of this eye-opening episode of 'What the Queer?'. Co-hosts Shauntelle Hammonds and Jamie Osorio are joined by Rory O. to unpack the ways traditional recovery systems fall short for Black, Brown, and Indigenous people who are also queer and trans.
They dive into how drug policies often push marginalized communities further into the margins, rather than offering a lifeline. Ever felt like you didn't belong somewhere you desperately needed to be? Rory shares their experiences as a student advocate, highlighting the alienation felt by BIPOC students in collegiate recovery programs. The conversation doesn't shy away from hard truths, but it also offers hope.
Harm reduction, often seen as a last resort, is reframed as a powerful tool for survival and thriving. The episode wraps up with a heartfelt call to listeners to practice self-love and kindness. It's a powerful reminder that recovery isn't just about quitting substances—it's about caring for every part of who you are.
