Rediscovering Joy: Play Therapy at Camp Henry
I think the really important lesson for me, um, that I think Camp Henry was able to give me, was that like: oh, um, it's possible for me to have fun still, because I think a big fear about people recovering from drugs and alcohol is that, um, you like you're not gonna be able to have fun without it.
Imagine a place where you can let go of your worries and simply play. That's what Camp Henry offers, and in this episode of 'Casting Light', Gwen and Jake from the camp join life coaches Dan and Debbie to discuss the magic of play therapy in addiction recovery. Camp Henry, a beloved summer camp in West Michigan since 1937, has been a sanctuary for Guiding Light clients for years. Why?
Because sometimes, the best way to heal is to rediscover the joy of being a kid again. Gwen shares how the camp provides a safe space for clients to step out of their comfort zones and engage in fun, zany activities. It's all about breaking down barriers and proving that vulnerability isn't something to fear. Jake adds that these playful experiences can be transformative, offering life-changing lessons that extend far beyond the camp itself.
By giving your brain evidence that it's okay to be vulnerable, you open up new pathways for personal growth and connection. Dan and Debbie dive into how play therapy helps clients remember how to have fun in sobriety. For many, the idea of enjoying life without substances can be daunting. But at Camp Henry, clients learn that fun and recovery aren't mutually exclusive.
Through laughter, games, and a sense of community, they find new ways to connect with themselves and others. So, if you're curious about how play can be a powerful tool in recovery, don't miss this heartwarming episode. Tune in to hear Gwen, Jake, Dan, and Debbie share their insights and stories from Camp Henry. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best way to heal is to let your inner child come out to play.
