I started liking the place from the time I got there because the atmosphere, the environment, was just warm and friendly and welcoming.
David's story begins in 1967, arriving in Vietnam with the ominous greeting, 'Welcome to Charlie Company'. War's brutal reality left him scarred, and upon returning home, he found solace in alcohol and drugs. His life spiraled out of control; he lost two wives, his family, and his career. David's addiction to crack cocaine became his escape from the pain of his past, leading him to spend more time in his basement than at a job.
But David's journey didn't end in despair. Through the support of Samaritan Village and other recovery groups, he found a way out of the darkness. This episode of Steppin' Out Radio offers a raw and honest look at the struggles veterans face and the power of community in overcoming addiction. David's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of finding support when it feels like all is lost.
