Finding Strength in Community: Brett and Kari Quall's Journey Through Miscarriage

The big things that happened to us was someone told us they could tell like God was prevalent in our lives because of the actual peace that we had with it.
Brett and Kari Quall's early years of marriage were marked by a series of heartbreaking miscarriages, a struggle that many couples face but often endure in silence. Their story, however, is one of resilience and the power of community. They found solace and strength through their faith in Christ, each other, and the support of those around them. This episode of 'Fortitude' with Heather Kittelson dives into their journey of pain, healing, and hope.
Brett and Kari met in college and have been married for over a decade. Their family includes two children and five 'angel babies'. Despite the overwhelming grief of losing their unborn children, they leaned on their faith and community for support. Kari recalls, 'One of the big things that happened to us was someone told us they could tell like God was prevalent in our lives because of the actual peace that we had with it'.
Their openness about their pain not only allowed others to support them but also showcased the power of vulnerability. Navigating grief as a couple is no easy task. Brett shares how he tried to alleviate Kari's burdens at home to give her space to mourn.
'I think I'm even still doing that today, trying to take pressures off the house of her, like so she could have time to mourn, where she didn't have to worry about doing the dishes or doing laundry or keeping the house cleaned up', he reflects. Their story underscores the importance of being present for your partner and creating a supportive environment for each other. The anxiety of subsequent pregnancies is a harsh reality for many who have experienced miscarriage.
Brett and Kari discuss how they coped with the fear and uncertainty that accompanied each new pregnancy. Kari admits, 'There's not excitement looking at an ultrasound anymore, it's just like, just please be okay, like that's where you're at'. Their journey is a testament to the courage it takes to hope again after experiencing loss. Their story also highlights the impact of accepting help from others.
Small acts of kindness, like meals or encouraging texts, made a significant difference in their healing process. Brett and Kari's experience is a reminder that we are not meant to face hardship alone. Ultimately, Brett and Kari's story is one of hope and healing. They honor the memory of their lost children and find beauty in their pain through faith and community support. Their journey is an inspiring example of fortitude in the face of adversity.
If you or someone you know is dealing with miscarriage or infertility, this episode offers a powerful reminder that you are not alone.
