Branislav Jankic: Healing from a Mother's Addiction through Art

I wanted to find women, mothers like her. I wanted to do it in America because I considered it my home. Everybody we talked to said: this is not good, this is negative. I talked to her, told her my story, what I wanted to do. It's interesting to me that people attacked you for what you were trying to do to the degree that we put a stigma on addiction and we don't talk about it and we don't educate people about it.
Picture growing up with a parent struggling with addiction, and then facing their terminal illness. Branislav Jankic's journey is a poignant one, centered not on his own addiction, but on his mother's. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Branislav's mother had battled drugs and alcohol for years, leaving scars on her family. To express his complex emotions and experiences, Branislav turned to art, creating a short documentary film titled 'Letter to My Mother'.
In this heartfelt episode of 'The Addiction Podcast - Point of No Return', Branislav opens up about the challenges and healing process of dealing with a loved one's addiction. He talks about the cathartic power of storytelling and how his creative projects helped him cope with his mother's struggles. His story sheds light on the broader impact of addiction on families and the importance of breaking the stigma that often surrounds it.
Branislav's narrative is not just about pain; it's about resilience and the transformative power of art. Through his film and book, he has given voice to many women and mothers facing similar battles. Despite facing societal discomfort and stigma, Branislav persisted, believing in the power of his message and the necessity of open conversations about addiction. This episode is a touching reminder that addiction affects everyone around the addict and that creative expression can be a powerful tool for healing.
Branislav's story encourages listeners to embrace alternative approaches to recovery and to support those who are struggling. By sharing personal stories, we can build a community of understanding and compassion, helping each other through the darkest times.
