Boban's Brave Journey: From Serbian Struggles to Canadian Advocacy

I deeply believe in visibility and what I learned from my friends from feminist movement: your presence not just like to be there and to do something and to lobby for some laws, in like being like sitting in some office and having, I don't know, like many meetings with stakeholders and decision makers.
Boban's life is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of community. Growing up in Serbia as a gay man, he faced violence and discrimination that pushed him to seek a safer life in Canada. On this episode of 'Voices in Recovery', Boban opens up about his harrowing experiences and the strength it took to leave his homeland. His story isn't just about survival; it's about thriving and making a difference for others.
Boban's advocacy didn't stop when he crossed borders. In Serbia, he was instrumental in organizing the first pride parade, despite the risks. Now in Canada, he works with the Centre for Newcomers, helping LGBTQ2S immigrants find their footing in a new country. He emphasizes the importance of visibility and community support, sharing, 'If I accept myself as a victim I will be stuck in one place'.
This episode is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by those who are marginalized and the incredible impact one person can have. Boban's journey from fear to freedom is filled with lessons on empathy, acceptance, and the necessity of creating inclusive spaces. Whether you're looking for inspiration or insight into the struggles of LGBTQ2S immigrants, Boban's story is a must-listen.
